Are you moving into a new home? One element you mustn’t forget is proper lighting. Here are some of the top tips from the lighting experts at our Calgary store to help you find the perfect lighting for your new space.

Moving into a new home can be a daunting task, and there are many details that you must consider to ensure your day-to-day satisfaction once the project is completed. Some of these include:

  • Lighting
  • Flooring
  • Storage space
  • Exterior finishes

Each of these can have an enormous impact on the aesthetics of your new home, but sadly most homeowners tend to undervalue proper lighting. 3 Things to Consider When Selecting Lighting For Your New Home

The right lighting in your house can have a huge impact on your day to day life and it can even increase your home’s value. That’s why, when upgrading your existing home, or moving into a new one, it’s so important to ensure you have installed the right type of lighting for your space.

Here are 3 things you must consider when selecting lighting for your new home:

1. The Lighting Size

No matter what type of lighting fixture you are looking for, choosing the right size is critical to achieving a balanced and aesthetically pleasing look. If you pick a fixture that is too big, it can throw off your decor, while one that is too small isn’t functional enough.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • A chandelier above your dining table. Measure the width of your table in inches and then look for chandeliers that are between ⅔ and ¾ of that width. Remember, complex lighting design can appear larger, so if you’re looking for something busy, scale down your width slightly.
  • Ambient lighting. Measure the width and length of the room you wish to light. Convert this number to inches by adding them together - this is the ideal width of the fixture you should buy (eg. for an 8x10 foot room, an 18-inch wide fixture would be ideal.)
  • Pendant lights above an island. Measure the width of the island/table and subtract 12 from that number. That is the maximum limit for the width of a hanging light in inches. If you want to use more than one pendant, space them at least 2 feet apart.

While choosing the right size light fixture does involvement some measurement and math, it will result in a room that truly looks its best.

2. The Layout of Your Lighting

Planning the layout of your lighting is extremely important because you want to make sure that your electrical framework can accommodate those choices. It is often recommended that you make some lighting choices before a home build because, if you don’t, your choices may be limited.

Do you want multiple pendant lighting?

There is a huge trend today towards larger fixtures or multiple pendants over a table/island, but because this isn’t the standard, many builders may not know to instal the wiring to accommodate them. It’s important to let your builder, contractor, or electrician know your vision so they have an idea of the type of lighting you want ahead of time.

3. Stick to a Consistent Style

Besides the layout and size of your lighting, your sense of style should be reflected in your choice as well. However, with so many options available, it can be hard to narrow down your choices to just a few fixtures.

Home Lighting Tip

To create a consistent style throughout your home, you should start with the main fixture (eg. in the entrance, dining room or kitchen island) and build your lighting style from that. By choosing one fixture you truly love, you can have a clearer focus with your design and carry that sense of style throughout your home.
